Google Technical Program Manager Salaries

What Do Technical Program Managers at Google Do?

Technical Program Managers need to have a wide spectrum of skills to be able to meet the demands of their role. Here’s what a Program Manager at Google typically does:

  • Plan and create project roadmaps, and make them scalable. 
  • Drive projects that involve liaising with multiple teams, including engineering, analytics, and marketing.
  • Manage project schedules and delegate project responsibilities. 
  • Oversee the development of internal processes and business applications.
  • Identify project risks and plan and execute sustainable long-term strategies. 

Qualifications for Technical Program Managers at Google

To be considered for the TPM role at Google, you should have the following qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree in a technical field, preferably in Computer Science, ML, or IT. 
  • 8+ years of experience in managing and driving technical projects that involved interacting with multiple teams. 
  • Proven experience in data analysis, capacity planning, and risk management.
  • Strong experience in project development lifecycle and project management. 

Google Technical Program Manager Salaries — United States

The table below lists the salaries of Technical Program Managers at Google across different tier levels. TPMs at Google start from a default tier-level of L3. 

As is evident from the table, as you progress across tier levels, your salary’s stock and bonus components also increase. 

Google Technical Program Managers Salaries by Experience

As you can see in the chart below, the pay for Technical Program Managers increases significantly as the number of years of experience grows. 

Google Technical Program Manager Salary Components

Below are the components in Technical Program Manager salaries:

Base Salary: The base salary is the fixed component of your salary. The base component is independent of other components and increases as you reach higher tier levels. 

Stock Option: Stock options are offered to Google Technical Program Managers with a vesting period, usually stretching up to 4 years. The vesting schedules for Google’s Restricted Stock Units are as follows:

  • 33% vests in the first year
  • 33% vests in the second year
  • 22% in the third year
  • 12% in the fourth year

Bonus: The bonus component is part of the total compensation and varies depending on the tier level. Senior positions at Google are offered higher stock units.
