A Quick Overview of Capital One

The fifth-largest back in the US, Capital One, has around $396 million in total assets. The company specializes broadly in three products — credit cards, commercial banking services, and retail banking.

On average, an employee at Capital one makes $101,500 per year. The exact figure ranges from $63,000 to $150,000 and is determined by the company’s employee position.

Capital One Interview Process

The Capital One interview process for a software engineer consists of two parts:

  1. Online assessment
  2. Power Day

1. Online Assessment Part of the Capital One Interview Process

The first part of the Capital One software engineer interview process is an online assessment test. This is assigned to you after you clear the initial screening call with HR or the hiring manager. You might be given up to two weeks to complete the test or have to do them on the spot.

There will be four questions on Code Signal, which you’ll have to complete in 70 mins. The questions will range in complexity, but it has been observed that just completing 3.25 is enough for you to proceed to the final round — Power Day.

2. Power Day in the Capital One Interview Process

The Power Day consists of four separate interviews. The first two are technical or “Job Fit” rounds; the third one is the behavioral interview, and the last is a case interview. The last round (case interview) is unique to the Capital One interview process.

You can expect Leetcode-style questions of medium difficulty and system design questions in the two technical interviews. As for the behavioral interview, the questions are pretty much the same as with other companies. Some examples for both have been given below.

Technical questions:

  • Given: An array of integers.

Find: Two integers whose sum is closest to zero (not necessarily zero).

  • Given: A number ‘n.’

Write: A program to get the sum of all prime numbers from 0 to n.

  • System design of a smart meter in an apartment.
  • List the advantages and disadvantages of moving to the Cloud.
  • Give an ORM used to access a java database.

Behavioral questions:

  • Tell us about a time when you had to change the requirements of a project and how you went about it.
  • How do you resolve conflicts with team members?
  • Have you ever had to work with a team member you didn’t get along with? If yes, how did you proceed?

So try incorporating similar questions when prepping for the Capital One interview process. You can check out the Problems page for more coding problems and solutions.

3. Case Interview Round in the Capital One Interview Process

The last round of the Capital One interview process is the case interview. It helps the interviewers assess your logical reasoning, communication, quantitative skills, and business judgment. It is divided into three sections:

  1. Business situation and framework: Keeping the case you’ve been given in mind, you’ll have to put together a simple case framework to answer the interviewer’s questions. When creating it, you’ll need to focus on the areas you deem important to answer the main question.
  2. Quantitative question: This section focuses on gauging your math skills. The interviewer will provide you with some data, and then you’ll have to carry out the calculations.
  3. Recommendation: In the last section, you’ll have to offer to make and defend a recommendation. You can form your recommendation based on the calculations you have done in the previous section. Just study the numbers, trust your instincts, and form your opinion.

Some useful tips for the case interview round of the Capital One interview process:

  • When the recruiter gives you a brief about the case, make sure you take notes.
  • Don’t shy away from asking questions. Ask the required questions to have a clear idea of what the case is about.
  • Often the cases won’t be based on the finance industry. So don’t be taken aback.
  • Give yourself some time to gather your thoughts before you begin answering.
